Cabinetry defines the form and function of a kitchen. They allow us to keep our kitchens neat and organized. Even though you may not think of them very often, cabinets can be the most important part of a kitchen build/renovation. Cabinets take up a large portion of your budget and there are so many options. It can be quite intimidating. However theres hope. Do your homework and be prepared when speaking with your designer or contractor. Ask yourself a few simple questions before diving in to all the options.

How many cabinets do you need?

Proper design can help maximize storage in a space, and with cabinet accessories storage can be better than ever. However, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Excessive cabinet space attracts more clutter and allows you to be disorganized quite easily. You are better off with just getting the space you need, maybe a bit extra if you can and keeping organized.

How much of your budget are you willing to dedicate to cabinetry?

There is a wide range of cabinetry option, from in stock to custom made. Stock options have little to no lead time, but are poor construction quality. Remember that these cabinets will be in your kitchen and used/looked at every day. You don’t need to have each one custom made, but built in cabinets are worth it.

What’s your style?

There are so many options when it comes to the world of cabinetry. Instead of going through each one, come to the table with a notion of what you are looking for. Be flexible but informed. It will save time if you know you are looking for contemporary or traditional cabinetry.
