For some, holidays mean family, entertaining and dinner parties. For others it means it’s time to pack the bags and hop on a plane to a tropical island, and laugh at all the cold people back home. For those of us who aren’t pulling the abandon ship card, it’s time to get our homes ready to be put on display for our family and friends.

Often our choice of hardware is one of the last decisions made, and you may not have ended up with exactly what you wanted. Others had no choice, the hardware is what came with the house. I have good news for all concerned parties: your hardware is not forever, if you don’t want it to be. It's actually one of the easiest things to change.

Hardware can be a great way to give your home a small makeover without getting involved in major projects. Changing hinges, knobs and pulls can help give your home a quick facelift when you want to show off for your friends and family this holiday season.

Perhaps now is the perfect time to add the barn door you've been wanting. Put one in your kitchen to cover up the pantry. It may eve be the perfect chance for you to use the chalk board paint you've been thinking of.

New hinges on your doors can improve their function. If your door is sitting crooked, sticks or squeaks, changing your hinges could help. Some of these hinges from Deltana could get you operating smoothly again, or some of these invisible hinges from Moddica if you are looking for something a bit more contemporary. Perhaps you are looking to add a bit of character to your home with some decorative hardware? For your cabinetry, consider purchasing soft close hinges to prevent the accidental slamming of doors and drawers.

Knobs and pulls are easily changed, breathe some new life into your cabinetry with new ones. A black matte finish can create just enough contrast to help the details stand out. Other items such as towel racks can be helpful to add in the kitchen or bathroom.

You may also consider less conventional uses of hardware. This article from Apartment Therapy gives some useful and creative ideas for hardware. Look beyond your doors and cabinetry. What about your furniture? Replacing the handles on a chest of drawers or side table can bring an old piece of furniture back to life to help your home sparkle for the season.
