People talk about raising the roof all the time. But sometimes you’ve just got to bring up the floor before you start building up. A rising tide lifts all boats.
There was a period of time when people felt like it would be a good idea to create a sunken floor. You walk into a room and have to step down. The steps take up a lot of space, and in this small condo it wasn’t ideal. It meant less room overall because you had to account for the 2 feet of steps around the living area. Which cut into the kitchen and the rest of their hosting space.
After years, that’s what these homeowners were finally able to accomplish what they knew they wanted: a cozy home to host their loved one. Their contractor was able to level the floor and they were able to increase the size of the kitchen and create seating in there. When you are looking to host, you want enough room for people to feel comfortable. You want space for people to sit down and talk to you while your in the kitchen.
By putting in the resources to raise the floor and create an equal level for their living space, they were able to create the home they always wanted.
In choosing the counters, they went with granite to highlight the local attributes. Cape Ann is full of beautiful stone like this granite. The backsplash was chose to compliment and reflect other shades of stone in the area.
Sometimes, you have to raise your the floor and your standards to create the environment that you want with your home. To get what you want out of your home, you first have to know what you want. It sounds easier than it is. And sometimes you have to put in a lot more work than you thought. But when you know what you want, it’s always worth it.
