    Case Study: Knowles Hall Renovation at Tilton School

    Project Overview
    Tilton School’s historic Knowles Hall, a well-loved dormitory, was due for a comprehensive upgrade. Originally constructed with unique architectural details and functional, albeit aging, fixtures, the building required major restoration. The focal point of this project became the windows, exterior casings, and pediments, which were both historically significant and in need of substantial repair. The goal was to replicate and enhance these elements while modernizing the structure for improved energy efficiency and functionality, bringing it to a standard suitable for a contemporary student residence.

     

    Scope of Work

    The renovation of Knowles Hall encompassed extensive work across multiple areas:

    • Windows and Trim: The original windows were replaced with Jeld-Wen units featuring a durable aluminum-clad exterior, which maintains the building’s historical look, while the white oak interiors add warmth to student spaces. The project’s specifications, developed by Gary, included custom extruded aluminum pediments and Jeld-Wen snap trim, blending function with aesthetic.
    • Enhanced Features for Durability: Custodial locks and sash lifts add a protective measure against potential wear in the active dorm environment, while functioning screens provide comfort for students and seasonal flexibility.

    Challenges and Solutions

    The project involved a complex, phased approach to accommodate ongoing student and faculty housing needs. Dividing the renovation into two phases extended the timeline but allowed continuous student occupancy. This staggered schedule required careful planning and coordination among the contractors, installers, and architectural firm, managed with a blend of efficiency and flexibility.

    Outcome

    The renovated Knowles Hall now offers a modern, comfortable, and durable living space for Tilton School students. The building retains its historic charm but now boasts enhanced functionality, energy efficiency, and aesthetics.
