When these North Shore homeowners set out to expand their coastal property, they wanted a space that felt both modern and inviting—a retreat for family gatherings, visiting guests, and their growing grandchildren. The homeowners worked with Architect Michael Szalaji, AIA of On The Boards Design, Heirloom Builders and Ryan Cotter from our Sales team to bring that vision to life with high quality materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, and plenty of natural light.

From the start, the goal was to design an addition that felt unique from the historic original home but still felt timelessly blended. The new space needed to feel fresh and contemporary, yet warm and full of character. To achieve that balance, Clear Vertical Grain (CVG) Douglas Fir was used throughout the interior—from the window trim, interior doors and wall panels to custom cabinetry and built-ins. The wood’s rich tone brings continuity and texture to every corner, creating a feeling of being enveloped in warmth but still spacious, a modern design that perfectly suits this coastal home.

Heirloom Builders crafted the custom cabinetry using vertical grain Fir plywood supplied by Grand Banks. Each piece—from the entertainment center and bar area to the bathroom vanity—was custom designed and constructed with precision and finished with Top Knobs Aspen and Riverside hardware for a touch of refined simplicity.

To maintain a cohesive look, the home features TruStile CVG Fir doors paired with Marvin transoms, both supplied by Grand Banks Building Products. These details create visual harmony and a sense of flow throughout the home. The addition’s Marvin Signature Ultimate windows also with CVG interior finish, frame panoramic views of the Atlantic at every angle while filling the rooms with natural light. A custom Marvin uneven three window mulled unit flanks the entry staircase and adds a touch of dramatic appeal to an otherwise minimalist foyer while Marvin Signature sliding doors seamlessly open the living and dining areas to the outdoors, embracing the best of coastal living on the North Shore.

Every detail was designed with intention and quality in mind. The Rocky Mountain Builder Series hardware on the interior doors adds a subtle, tactile luxury that complements the wood tones throughout. One of the project’s standout features is a custom bifold door built by Heirloom Builders using TruStile panels and HAWA sliding solutions, giving the homeowners the option to separate the main living area from the new addition when guests visit—adding privacy without sacrificing style.

The addition also includes a fully equipped home gym, featuring a Marvin unit with switchable privacy glass that transitions from clear to frosted with the touch of a button. It’s a sleek, modern solution that balances function and design.

With its mix of high quality natural materials, a modern and complimentary combination of Trustile and Marvin windows and doors, and expertly crafted custom millwork, this project captures the warmth and sophistication of modern coastal living. Grand Banks Building Products was proud to partner with the talented team at Heirloom Builders to supply the TruStile doors, Rocky Mountain hardware, CVG Fir millwork, and Marvin Signature Ultimate windows and doors that made this ocean-view addition truly unique and timeless for this family and generations to come.
