Building a home is a long and intense process. It’s expensive and there are a lot of choices to make, and almost infinite options for each decision. It’s almost impossible to make all of those decisions for yourself, and at least twice as hard when you are doing it with your family. But it’s possible. Your home is built with every choice. With every decision, you come closer to the finished house. When that’s done it’s time to settle in.

Life has a way of surprising us when we become comfortable, when we think we’ve found our way. When the path forward seems clear, that seems to be the place where everything goes wild. For this family it was a fire. Their family home in Annisquam was burnt down. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but they were left to rebuild. With destruction comes the opportunity to build anew. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, their new home came to life. It wasn’t part of the plan. But everything happens for a reason, and this new home is more than they could have asked for. They were able to create an open concept. Expanding and connecting the kitchen to the rest of the home.

Once your home is built and you’ve chosen all the styles, hardware and finishes, it’s time to settle in. Every home is different. Even when you are rebuilding, things are going to change and you’ll be faced with a new set of choices. Don’t succumb to choice fatigue and don’t rush yourself. This is your home. You are going to be here for a while and you don’t have to make all these choices right away. You can have a blank spot on the wall while you wait for the perfect piece of art to come into your life. It takes time to settle in.

There is a saying that a carpenter's home is never finished. I would say that no home is ever complete. Your life and your home are forever changing. Those changes may not always be as drastic as your home burning down. Just when you think you’ve created the perfect space, some new piece of art will come along and you will feel compelled to find space for it. The perfect home doesn’t have to be the same forever. The perfect home is the one that grows and changes with your life.
